As one of the oldest operations in the American International Group (AIG), we are proud to have been part of the Hong Kong business and wider community since 1931. During the course of our 85 years, we have witnessed and experienced Hong Kong’s growth, transformation and evolution. As we celebrate our 85th anniversary, we showcase here some of the iconic images which chronicle our story.
1919: Cornelius Vander Starr establishes American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU), a general insurance underwriting agency, in Shanghai, China.
1931: ALICO and AAU were joined and incorporated in Hong Kong

1940: In 1940, AAU’s name was officially changed to American International Underwriters Limited (AIU)
1948-1949: With turmoil and civil war on the Mainland, AAU’s Shanghai operation (employees and records) were airlifted and relocated to Hong Kong (an early example “a business continuity plan” in action, perhaps!)
