Domestic Worker Insurance Plans

AIG aims to meet your individual needs by offering three customized domestic helper insurance plans.

The Basic Plan protects you, as the employer, against liability under the Employees Compensation Ordinance if your domestic worker sustains a bodily injury by accident or disease arising out of and throughout the course of employment in Hong Kong. It also covers you if your helper travels with you outside of Hong Kong for the first 5 days of the trip. This plan is most suitable for local part-time domestic helpers, maids and doulas.

Extra Care

  • The Extra Care plan protects the employer against contractual liability for accidental injury and death, hospitalization and surgical expenses, fidelity coverage and repatriation expenses. This option is most suited to foreign domestic helpers

vs

Super Care

  • The Super Care plan is the most comprehensive option for domestic helper insurance, protecting the employer against contractual liability for clinical expenses and dental expenses in addition to hospitalization and surgical expenses, fidelity coverage and repatriation expenses. Foreign domestic helpers’ clinical expenses are also covered for treatment provided by a registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner and Bonesetter.

Cancer and Heart Disease Endorsement is available as an additional option, protecting your helper for treatment of a serious illness.*

*Only available as an additional option to the Extra Care and Super Care plans for 1-year and 2-year premiums, offering flexibility in arranging the policy according to contractual terms of employment. The additional offer is applicable only to foreign domestic helpers aged 18-64; those aged 60 and above will be subject to additional loading of premiums.

FAQs

As an employer, you are required take out employees’ compensation insurance to cover your liabilities for your helper’s injuries at work. This is a requirement under the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance and foreign domestic helpers are entitled to the same benefits and protection under the Employment Ordinance. Failure to do so is an offence in law, punishable by a fine and imprisonment.

You are also required to provide free medical treatment to your foreign domestic helper according to the standard employment contract, which is another reason it is advisable for you to apply for a Domestic Worker Protector to cover the related medical expenses when they arise.

These legal obligations aside, however, buying the right coverage for the domestic helpers who help take care of your family is the right thing to do.

We have age limit for application for insured helpers:

                (a) Aged between 18 and 60 on inception of the policy

                (b) Aged 61 to 64 are subject to underwriting approval and loading

This policy does not cover any domestic helpers who are aged above 64 except in the case subsequent insurance renewals where the insurance policy was first purchased before the domestic helper reached this age.

This Policy covers the following geographical area:

        (a) Hong Kong

        (b) Worldwide when accompanying the policyholder on oversea trips, but only for the first 5 days for such trip in the policy year.

Yes, there is a 14-day waiting period for the hospital, dental and clinical benefits.

No. You can simply change your insured helper under your existing policy. No new application is required. Instead you can simply write to us, giving details of the new helper who is to be insured under the policy, cs.hk@aig.com. Your new helper will then be named in the Schedule to your policy. During the remaining period of insurance under the policy, the same benefits shall be payable in respect of the new insured helper as named in the Schedule, less any amount already paid under the policy for your previous helper.

The policy may be cancelled at any time at the request of the Insured in writing to AIG Insurance Hong Kong Limited. Provided no claim has arisen during the policy year, the policyholder shall be entitled to a partial refund of the total premium paid during the current insurance period as per the Short Term Premium Refund Table stated on the policy provisions, subject to the retaining minimum amount of HK$300 from the premium paid.

Each Domestic Worker Protector policy covers one insured helper only.

Yes, we may issue an endorsement to cover this one month for two helpers, subject to additional premium.

The hospital and clinical expenses do not cover cancer or heart disease. However, they could be covered by paying an additional premium:

  • One-year premium: HK$300
  • Two-year premium: HK$540

We can only update the policy information upon receiving the notice from the policy owner about the new domestic helper. We cannot back date the policy.
