About Us

As one of the oldest operations in the American International Group (AIG), we are proud to have been part of the Hong Kong business and wider community since 1931. During the course of our 90 years, we have witnessed and experienced Hong Kong’s growth, transformation and evolution and we would like to showcase here some of the iconic images which chronicle our story in Hong Kong.

1900s

1919

The founder of the company AIG traces roots to, Mr. StarrCornelius Vander Starr establishes American Asiatic Underwriters (AAU), a general insurance underwriting agency, in Shanghai, China.

1920s

1923

Nelle Vander Starr (center) joins the company’s early operations in Shanghai, China, later becoming the first woman executive.

1926

The first U.S. office, American International Underwriters (AIU), opens in New York City.

1930s

1936

1940s

1948-49

With turmoil and civil war on the Mainland, AAU’s Shanghai operation (employees and records) were airlifted and relocated to Hong Kong (an early example “a business continuity plan” in action, perhaps!)
